Triumph & Celebration

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is one of the greatest composers of the last several hundred years, and is not
played nearly enough! We will change that! These Variations have been said to be one of his
finest compositions, and they are based on an African folk hymn. Emotional and powerful, it is
guaranteed to make you a fan of the composer if you aren’t already! And bringing the ASO’s 53rd season and Michael Repper’s debut to a celebratory end is Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No.2. The enthusiastic reaction to the premiere of this symphony earned the composer a second Glinka Award; a true testament to triumph and celebration! And, the piece has had lasting impact not in classical music – you may know the theme from the third movement as the famous rock ballad Never Gonna Fall in Love Again by Eric Carmen!

Symphonic Variations on an African Air, op.63 – Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Symphony No.2, 90.27, E minor – Sergei Rachmaninoff
