Light from Darkness

Isaac Selya, Conductor Finalist

Weber – Der Freischütz, J.277: Overture
Tchaikovsky – Scenes from Onegin and Iolanta
Raquel González, soprano
M. Andrew Jones, tenor
Sibelius – Symphony No.5, op.82, E-flat major

The works on this program juxtapose extremes of light and dark. Weber’s opera Der Freischütz depicts supernatural evils that lurk in the forest, as well as the eventual triumph of goodness. Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin contains scenes of heartrending sadness as well as joy, and the duet from Iolanta is about a young blind princess learning about light. Sibelius’ Symphony No.5 depicts the bleak cold of the Finnish landscape, but ends with a hopeful flight of swans. — I. Selya
